Animal Kingdom

Tickets are now on sale for Disney's Animal Kingdom. The Animal Kingdom is one of four theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort located in sunny Orlando, Florida.

Animal Kingdom stretches across 500 acres and is home to more than 1,700 animals. The theme park opened on April 22, 1998, and is so popular that last year 2008 alone hosted over nine million guests.

Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the park is Disney's first theme park concerned with animal conservation, an idea and philosophy that Walt Disney during his life time led the way.

At the center of the Animal Kingdom stands the Tree of Life. The tree of life is pretty much a replica of the Rafiki's home from the movie The Lion King, although the artificial tree in the Animal Kingdom is much taller—a 145-foot refitted, recycled oil platform.

Inside the tree, guests can watch the 3-D movie It's Tough to be a Bug!, and for the curious guest you can hunt for the hidden picture of Mickey Mouse.

From the Tree of Life, the Animal Kingdom separates out into seven distinct areas of the theme park: The Oasis, Discovery Island®, Camp Minnie-Mickey, Africa, Rafiki's Planet Watch®, Asia, and Dinoland, U.S.A®.

The Oasis exhibit contains garden pathways, waterfalls, streams, Parma wallaby, tree-kangaroos, giant anteaters, sloth, Chinese deer and exotic birds such as the Hyacinth Macaw.

Discovery Island offers up-close and personal wildlife encounters with animals such as the Galapagos tortoise, lemurs, and cotton-top tamarin monkeys. Camp Minnie-Mickey gives the guest opportunities for a photo shoot with his or her favorite Disney character.

Africa area boasts the Kilimanjaro Safaris, a tour that begins in the Harambe Wildlife Reserve where the guests ride a rugged truck in search of giraffes, black rhinos, and lions. The tour ends on a chase after elephant poachers.

Rafiki's Planet Watch includes the Conservation Station, an air-conditioned building where guests can inter-mingle with the on-site animal handlers; learn about veterinary care, feeding the animals and other activities that are a part of the every day life of a Disney animal handler. Asia displays native animals of the Asian continent and hosts two of the Animal Kingdom's major theme rides.

Dinoland USA showcases Dino-Sue, a replica of the 13-foot tall, 40-foot long most complete T-Rex ever found. The real thing stands at The Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois, but even though Dino-Sue is only a replica, at the length of a four-story building on its side, the dinosaur is still an impressive thing to behold.
