Tucked inside Disney's Animal Kingdom is DinoLand USA, and within DinoLand USA resides The Boneyard—a dinosaur playground for both preschoolers and grade school-age kids.
The enclosed attraction resembles an archeological dig site complete with rope ladders, tunnels, and slides all geared toward the small stature of children. Tickets for the Boneyard are now readily available.
Specifically, the Boneyard offers giant, multi-leveled mazes, covered slides, and tunnels. The shaded dig site is outfitted with special non-stick sand called "Texas-Grit." Most of the indoor flooring is made up of a soft sponge like material to keep kids from hurting themselves as they romp and play.
Inside the sand various fossils are buried and reburied throughout the day. You can search for wooly mammoths, Tyrannosaurus-Rex, and Triceratops. The "xylobone," is a set of fossilized bones set into the side of a hill. When the bones are knocked on, they produce music.
A life-sized jeep is available for the kids to climb all over and in general just play on. There are even more tunnels and hidden surprises, but most importantly there is a shaded seating area with fans and music for the adults.
The Boneyard Playground covers over a half acre of land. It was a premier attraction of Disney's Animal Kingdom Dinoland U.S.A. when first opened in 1998.
The playground is wheelchair and motorized scooter accessible, and there is no time limit on how long kids can stay and play. Many review sites state that the Boneyard attraction is a great place for an adult break and children ages one to five years old.
Two hidden Mickey's can be found in the Boneyard. One is located at the wooly mammoth dig site and the second is found in the soft floor covering at the drinking fountain on the ground level.
