The Kali River Rapids is a themed river raft expedition along the Chakranadi River which opened in 1999. Originally named the Tiger Rapids Run, the Kali River Rapids was Disney's first attempt at a river rapids type ride.
Keeping with the Animal Kingdom's conservation theme, the Kali River Rapids the attraction strives to educate the guest on illegal logging and habitat destruction.
The CEO of "Kali Rapids Expeditions" greets you in the boathouse via television screen, explaining the company's mission: to show visitors the beauty of the Asian area. She then talks about the illegal loggers in the nearby vicinity.
Kali River Rapids queue takes the guest past ancient statues, shrines, overgrown ruins, and right outside the loading dock there are several placed sandals—an Asian tradition of taking off one's shoes before entering buildings.
The loading dock, or the pagoda, is also decorated with Tibetan prayer flags, and guests are loaded onto their 12-person raft. The rafts have unique names like Sherpa Surfer and Kali Bumper Car.
There is scented mist as you climb a 90-foot hill, only to float you through geysers and waterfalls all through heavy jungle populated with all kinds of animals. As the water gets rougher, in the distance you hear chainsaws and can smell smoke.
At the bend, the land has been burned away. There is even a bridge on fire you must pass underneath, and then a 30-foot plummet where everyone gets more than wet.
There are more rapids, more waterfalls, a turn downward which looks like it’ll land you smack dab center into a granite rock face, only to pass through a cave. At the end of the ride, spectators control elephant water guns.
The non-stop action packed ride lasts an entire four and half minutes, FASTPASS is available, and if you are wheelchair or motorized scooter bound, you must be transferred into the ride without the wheelchair or scooter.
